Fun with Circles: Std. IV Mathematics
Last week I taught my std. four students, concepts related to a circle. My objective was for children to identify and name the different parts of a circle, namely, radius, diameter, chord, arc and circumference. The pandemic has forced us to become more creative teachers. We are constantly thinking of ways in which we can make our lessons interactive, fun and effective.
Since this was an introductory session on circles, I decided to create a small video story around a cricket ground and a cricket match. My video showed a cricket ground which was in the shape of a circle and there were players like Virat and Dhoni on the field. Using such fictional accounts, the video tried to explain the concepts. I played the video during the live class. I would pause the video in between and converse with the children, ask them questions and elicit responses.
After the class, I asked the children to take a chapati and draw the concepts we had just learned using ketchup, sauce or chutney. Once they had done that they had to label the figure appropriately. Finally of course, they had to gobble up their chapati.
The next day I encouraged children to put on their thinking caps and be more creative. They could draw, create or use any object around them to label the parts of a circle. Here are some things that my students did.
